Last Week.

The week of 11May-15May.

Yeah, the rest of the week of the 4th is a blur, so I figured I'd just jump into this last week. However, it should be noted that ELW began her trek to Alaska on the 11th, her last day was the 8th.

EB57. Started a structure this week with BJS. A new guy was working down from us cutting possible posts, but then got moved across the street to the "clean EB." This so called "clean EB" will be used for dept. of transportation tours. The dirt removed from features there will be wheeled out as they dig so as to leave clean holes. Rule 1. Do not step on tarps.

So, our structure dies into the wall of the EB which just so happens to be the end of the right of way. So, all we get is this corner. Sadface. Started by bringing down the basin fill, BJS found a cluster of rims and sherds near the AB line (which just so happened to be about a foot, maybe less, from the EB wall). Got everything down to level and were tasked with hoeing down the floor. Had some nice trench staining in spots btw.

So, hoeing down the floor, I hear the tell-tale *chink* of some sort of stone. We'd found bits of chert here and there, so I was just expecting another flake. To my surprise, when I knelt down and cleaned it off, it was actually a whole point. A real, live, looks like it does in the movies arrowhead. Some of you might be saying "So what?" Well, I'm still rather new to this archaeology game and I've never dug one up. I've seen some that other people have discovered, but this was mine. They chipped it down so finely that the edges are translucent. It was amazing. The only thing that brought me down was I didn't get to be down at dirt level scraping with my trowel, the hoe dragged it out. Even still, though.

Progression was slow going, we had to remap numerous times. It was a weird cut, too. Since we only had the corner TJZ requested we section it off into thirds, cut a CD and a DE profile, then take those 2 sections back to the AB. In the CD profile JDK thought he saw a B zone that wasn't present in the DE. So, our floor is now of 2 levels. Taken back to the AB we're asked to hoe down the floor again, photo the floor in plan, then we help define posts w/in the structure and the wall trenches. We ended the week cutting posts. Have about 3 left, I think. After this we get to move on to yet another structure that's running into an EB wall, only this one goes under the street next to where we're working. Ah well.

Other highlights of the week: the 18th is the big Dept. of Transport. tour. Guess I'll put on a real shirt.
